How to Make the Perfect Cup of Chai

There is something special about a freshly brewed cup of chai. It is not just a drink. It is part of our mornings, family conversations, guest gatherings, and everyday Pakistani moments.

But making a truly satisfying cup of chai comes down to a few simple things: the right balance of tea, milk, water, sugar, and brewing time.

1. Start with the Right Tea

The quality of your tea makes the biggest difference. A good tea blend should deliver a rich colour, strong aroma, and full-bodied taste without requiring too much tea.

For a strong and flavourful cup, choose a tea that gives you a good yield so that every spoonful goes further.

2. Get the Water-to-Milk Ratio Right

The perfect ratio depends on how you like your chai, but a balanced combination of water and milk helps bring out both the strength of the tea and the creaminess of the milk.

For a classic cup, start with:

  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon tea
  • Sugar according to taste

You can adjust the milk and water depending on whether you prefer your chai lighter or stronger.

3. Let the Tea Brew Properly

Don’t rush the brewing process.

Add the tea to boiling water and allow it to simmer for a few minutes. This gives the tea enough time to release its colour, aroma, and flavour.

Once the tea has developed a rich colour, add the milk and continue simmering.

Tip: Avoid boiling your chai aggressively for too long. A controlled simmer helps maintain a smoother flavour.

4. Add Sugar at the Right Time

Sugar is a personal preference, but adding it while the chai is simmering helps it dissolve evenly.

Whether you prefer your chai slightly sweet or properly meethi, adjust the quantity to your taste.

5. Give It Time to Come Together

The final simmer is where everything comes together.

Allow the tea, milk, and sugar to blend for another minute or two. You’ll notice the colour becoming richer and the aroma becoming stronger.

That’s when you know your chai is ready.

6. Strain and Serve Fresh

Strain your chai directly into your favourite cup and serve it hot.

For the best experience, enjoy it fresh rather than letting it sit for too long. A hot cup of chai has a completely different aroma and taste.
